The taste of lemongrass, ginger & cinnamon
The Rotterdam harbor is the economic heart of the city. Thanks to the hard work of both the harbor barons and the ‘Binkies’.
Binkies is the nickname for the young boys who did all the hard work on the ships and quay.
And the barons, or ‘Bobos’, as the Binkies in a slightly contemptuous way would say, not only provided a lot of jobs for the 'Rotterdammers', but were also benefactors and very charitable.
One of the most famous barons the city has ever had is Mr. Van Beuningen.
During his life he gave several of his art collections away to the Boijmans Van Beuningen museum. In the museum’s collection, ranging from medieval to contemporary art, are works of Rembrandt, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and Salvador Dalí!
